2-Methylpropane-2-sulfonyl chloride is a reagent that is used to introduce sulfonyl groups into organic compounds. The reagent is prepared by the reaction of ethylene and pyridine in the presence of sulfur, which can be removed by heating to high temperatures. 2-Methylpropane-2-sulfonyl chloride reacts with chlorides to give fluorosulfonyl chlorides, which are useful as solvents. This reagent may also be used for the preparation of sulfones and sulfonamides, although it is not as reactive as other solvents such as acetic anhydride or phenyl chloroformate.
