(+)-(4R,5S)-4-Methyl-5-phenyl-2-oxazolidinone (1) is a chiral molecule that can be obtained through the asymmetric synthesis of (+)-(3R,4S)-3,4-dihydroxybutanoic acid (2). The optical rotation of 1 is +28. The stereoselective synthesis of 1 involves the use of a carboxylic acid as a reagent and sodium salts as solvents. The molecular mechanism for the production of 1 is based on the formation and rearrangement of an oxazolidinone ring. The stereoselective synthesis provides an optical purity greater than 98%. (+)-(4R,5S)-4-Methyl-5-phenyl-2-oxazolidinone has been shown to have neurotoxicity in mice and may cause reproductive toxicity in pregnant women.
