4-Maleimidomethyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxyl-hydrazide (4MCHC) is a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) analog that stimulates the production of osteogenic proteins and glycosaminoglycans. It can be used as a reagent to synthesize hydroxyapatite, which is used in dentistry and orthopedic surgery. 4MCHC has been shown to have an affinity for bone, cartilage, and other connective tissue cells by binding to specific amino acid residues on their surface. It has also been shown to modulate the chemistry of these cells. The effects are mediated through bisphosphonates, basic fibroblasts growth factors, heparin, and glycosaminoglycans.
