Maneb is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of organophosphates. It is used as an agricultural fungicide and insecticide. Maneb has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial activity, and cellular energy metabolism. This can lead to neuronal death in vitro. Maneb also inhibits the transcriptional regulation of pro-apoptotic proteins by cyclin D2 in neuronal cells. This may be due to its ability to increase 5-hydroxytryptamine concentrations in the brain, which leads to increased cyclin D2 expression levels.
