Mannostatin B is a chiral carbocycle that has been shown to have potential use in the treatment of cancer. It is a prodrug that can be converted into an active form by hydrolysis at the ester bond. The active form of mannostatin B is methylsulfinyl-imine, which binds to the enzyme cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) and inhibits its activity. This prevents the transfer of cholesterol from HDL to LDL, leading to reduced levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood. Mannostatin B also has a stereoselective effect on carbohydrate metabolism and has been shown to inhibit glycosidases and phosphatases as well as carbohydrate synthesis.
