Methioprim is a diagnostic agent used for the diagnosis of cavity. It is a molecule that is not metabolized by any known enzymes, and can therefore be used as a target tissue for molecular imaging to determine the presence of bacteria. Methioprim has been shown to react with reactive functional groups in protein molecules and is able to label proteins with fluorescence. This agent also inhibits growth factor activity, which may be due to its ability to bind to the gene product of target tissue. Methioprim has been shown to have antiviral properties against influenza virus and other viruses that infect mammalian cells.
Methioprim has also been shown to have an effect on geriatric patients, due to its ability to bind monoclonal antibodies that are specific for bacterial cell wall components.
