4-Methoxy-3-(3-methoxypropoxy)benzenemethanol is a colorless solid with a mild, sweet odor. It is soluble in ethanol and ether but insoluble in water. This compound can be prepared by the reduction of 4-methoxy-3-(3-hydroxypropoxy)benzenemethanol, which is an environmental pollutant. The reduction reaction requires potassium carbonate and sodium sulfate as catalysts and takes place at room temperature or at refluxing temperatures. Sodium borohydride can be used as a reducing agent for this reaction, although it is more expensive to use than potassium borohydride. The product can be extracted using ether or ethyl acetate.
