Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin antibiotic that is active against many bacteria. It belongs to the group of β-lactam antibiotics, which prevents the formation of bacterial cell walls by binding to the enzyme D-alanyl-D-alanine carboxypeptidase (penicillin binding protein). Amoxicillin is used for the treatment of bacterial infections such as inflammatory bowel disease and acute abdominal pain. Amoxicillin has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting proinflammatory cytokines. This drug also inhibits bacterial growth by impairing DNA synthesis and protein synthesis, but does not affect viral replication. Amoxicillin may also have an effect on probiotic bacteria in the gut.
