Methyl 7-(3-hydroxy-5-oxo-cyclopent-1-ene)heptanoate is a liquid that has been isolated from the vessel of a plant. It is an aldehyde and can be used to synthesize prostaglandins. Methyl 7-(3-hydroxy-5-oxo-cyclopent-1-ene)heptanoate reacts with ethylene to produce cyclopentenone, which reacts with hydroxyl groups on a metal compound to form epoxide. This compound can then react with an alcohol to form ketone. The reaction vessel was heated at 100 degrees Celsius in order to isolate methyl 7-(3-hydoxy-5-oxo-)cyclopentane heptanoate.
