6-Methylindole is a chemical compound that is used in the production of other chemicals. It has been shown to induce cancer in animals and its metabolites are carcinogenic in animal models. 6-Methylindole is also a coagulant and can be used for the treatment of cancer, but it is not approved for use in humans.
6-Methylindole has been shown to induce cell death by activating the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, which leads to cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) activation. 6-Methylindole also activates odorant receptors found in insects and mammals, which may be responsible for its unpleasant odor.
