2-Methoxyfuran is a furanic compound and an intermediate in the preparation of trifluoroacetic acid. It has been used in the production of dyes, such as 2-methoxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde. The Friedel-Crafts reaction is one of the most widely used methods for converting alkyl halides to alkenes. In this reaction, 2-methoxyfuran is converted to ethyl diazoacetate by reacting with hydrogen over an aluminum chloride catalyst. The ethyl diazoacetate can then be reacted with a variety of electrophiles, including alcohols and phenols, to produce different products. The reaction proceeds via nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group by the oxygen atom on carbon 2. This stereoselective reaction produces only one enantiomer (the S configuration).
2-Methoxyfuran is also used in asymmetric synthesis via transfer reactions
