2-(Methylthio)ethanol is a metabolite of the methyl group and is found in mitochondrial cytochrome. This compound has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the methyltransferase enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to N6,N6-dimethyllysine on histone proteins. It also has the ability to stabilize membranes and prevent membrane permeability, which may be due to its ability to bind chloride ions. 2-(Methylthio)ethanol can be used as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent for use in covid-19 pandemic studies.
