2-Mercapto-4-methyl-5-thiazoleacetic acid is a thiazole derivative with two functional groups, a carboxylate and a sulfhydryl group. It has been used as a fluorescence probe to study hydrogen bonding interactions in the bladder cancer cells. 2-Mercapto-4-methyl-5-thiazoleacetic acid can be used as an x-ray crystal structure for determining the three dimensional structure of the protein cytochrome P450 reductase. This compound has also shown photocatalytic activity, but not amide formation, when exposed to ultraviolet light. 2MSTA is able to reduce hydrochloric acid to produce HCl gas and Cl2 gas.
