5-Maleimido-eosin is a fluorescent dye that can be used for diagnosis of diseases. It binds to sulfhydryl groups on proteins, such as those found in the cytochrome oxidase enzyme and mitochondrial DNA. 5-Maleimido-eosin is also a substrate for trypsin treatment and can be used in the diagnosis of pancreatic disorders. When bound to lysine residues, it can be used to detect blood group types A and B. 5-Maleimido-eosin has also been shown to bind to mitochondria and inhibit the production of ATP by binding to adenine nucleotide translocase, which transports adenine nucleotides across the mitochondrial membrane. This process leads to irreversible inhibition of ATP synthesis and cell death.
