Methionine methyl ester is a chiral molecule that has been shown to have anti-cancer properties. Methionine methyl ester was synthesized by reacting methionine with thioanisole in the presence of potassium hydroxide, which transformed the sulfoxide group into an ester. This compound is then hydrolyzed to give methionine methyl ester hydrochloride and potassium chloride. Methionine methyl ester hydrochloride is a white crystalline solid that can be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, mainly for the production of pharmaceuticals. Methionine methyl ester hydrochloride also has photochemical properties and can be used as a photosensitizer for singlet oxygen generation. The reaction rate for methionine methyl ester hydrochloride is much faster than for other analogues such as L-methionine ethyl ester hydrochloride and L-methioninium ethyl chloride.
