Dimethylbenzoyl cyanide is an inorganic base that can be synthesized by the addition of 2-methylbenzoic acid to sodium cyanide. This compound is a byproduct of the chlorination of benzene and its derivatives. Dimethylbenzoyl cyanide has been shown to undergo thermally induced dimerization to form benzocyanides, which are reactive intermediates in organic reactions. The reaction yield for this compound is increased with the addition of catalysts such as NaOCl or KOH.
