7-Methoxyoxindole is a guinea pig-specific metabolite of the analgesic drug oxindole. Oxindole was synthesized in 1925 and was used as a treatment for pain, but it was not until 1950 that the guinea pig metabolite 7-methoxyoxindole was discovered. The pharmacology of 7-methoxyoxindole has been studied in vivo and in vitro using rat liver preparations. It has been found to have an affinity for the nucleus, which may be due to its methylation.
