Methyl Red is a dye that is used as an indicator to monitor the bacterial growth or activity in a culture. It is typically used with other indicators, such as Bromthymol Blue, Phenol Red and Methylene Blue. The optimum concentration of Methyl Red ranges from 0.1 to 1 mg/L and it should be activated with sodium salts before use. Methyl Red has been shown to bind to the dinucleotide phosphate (NDP) in bacteria and this binding inhibits the reaction mechanism of nitrogen atoms that are essential for aerobic respiration. This inhibition causes a decrease in ATP production and cell death. In human serum, methyl red binds to proteins and this binding prevents their oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The kinetic properties of methyl red have also been investigated for wastewater treatment and surface methodology applications. Aerobacter aerogenes is one of the bacteria strains that methyl red can be used to detect.
