Methyl 2,4-dioxo-4-phenylbutanoate is a water soluble compound that has been used as an inhibitor drug for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and cholinesterase (ChE) enzymes. It has shown significant potency against AChE and ChE in vitro. Methyl 2,4-dioxo-4-phenylbutanoate is also used to treat Alzheimer's disease by inhibiting the production of acetylcholine. This compound is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme anhydrous sodium amine, which catalyzes the reaction between carbonyl compounds and amines to form imines. Molecular modeling studies have shown that methyl 2,4-dioxo-4-phenylbutanoate binds to the active site of AChE and ChE with high selectivity.
