4-(4-Methylphenoxy)benzaldehyde is a catalytic molecule that can be used in the conversion of 4-methylphenol to benzyl alcohol. This reaction is carried out by adding 4-(4-methylphenoxy)benzaldehyde with concentrated sulfuric acid and ethylene glycol, which forms a catalyst system. The reaction mixture is then heated to reflux for 30 minutes. After cooling, the solution is filtered and the filtrate evaporated to dryness. The product is purified through vacuum distillation or column chromatography. Carbon nanotubes are used as a reusable and recyclable catalyst for this reaction because they have high surface area, easy separation, and good thermal stability.
