4-Methylpiperidine hydrochloride (4MPH) is a nonpolar ion-pair that is soluble in nonpolar solvents such as hexane and chloroform. It has been used to study the solvent effect on protonation and anion-cation interactions. 4MPH has been shown to have anti-tumor effects due to the inhibition of topoisomerase II, which prevents the breaking and rejoining of DNA strands during replication. The protonated form of 4MPH can be detected using magnetic resonance spectroscopy at high concentrations (1 mM) in aqueous media, while the deprotonated form can be seen at low concentrations (10 μM). This compound is also sensitive to changes in pH, with maximal activity occurring at pH 8.5.
