N-Me-Gln-OH is a protein synthesis inhibitor that is structurally related to the amino acid lysine. It inhibits the activity of enzymes such as lysine methyltransferase and corynebacterium glutamicum synthetase. The nitrite reductase of C. glutamicum is inhibited by N-Me-Gln-OH, which prevents the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide (NO). The uptake of N-Me-Gln-OH into C. glutamicum cells was found to be mediated by a proton symporter and facilitated by an H+/Cl--antiporter. N-Me-Gln-OH has been shown to inhibit photosynthetic activity in plants and may be used for treatment of cancer or other diseases involving cell proliferation.
