It has been isolated from the legume Swartzia madagascariensis, which is native to Madagascar. 1-Amino-3-(hydroxymethyl)cyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid has been shown to have a molecular weight of 284.22 g/mol and an empirical formula of C6H11NO5. The compound exhibits a melting point of 220°C and crystallizes in the monoclinic system.
