5-Nitro-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazol-2-one is a chemical compound that is synthesized from chlorobenzene. It is used to produce a number of other chemicals, such as glycol and nitrophenols. This chemical can be made by the nitration of benzimidazole or by the reaction of hydrazine with nitrous acid. The reaction conditions for this compound are optimized at pH 6.5 and at a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. The time required for this reaction is about 1 hour, and the product will form in yields of 70% to 80%. This product can also be recycled back into the nitration process after it has been reduced with sodium in an alkaline solution.
