4-Nonylbenzoic acid is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 112.5°C. It has a solubility of 0.11 g/L in water and is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform, or diethyl ether. This compound can be synthesized by heating Grignard reagent with 4-nonylphenol, followed by the addition of potassium carbonate to the reaction mixture. 4-Nonylbenzoic acid can also be obtained by reacting an alkyne with an activated methyl ester or triflate at room temperature under iron catalyst in the presence of chlorides or conformational constraints. This compound is paramagnetic and has been used for analyses.
