N-[2-(5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]-2-oxopiperidine-3-carboxamide is a synthetic compound that inhibits protein synthesis. It is activated by intramolecular hydrogen, which can be generated by light exposure or enzymatic oxidation, and binds to the active site of protein synthesis to inhibit ribosomal activity. N-[2-(5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]-2-oxopiperidine 3 carboxamide has been shown to be neuroprotective in preclinical studies and attenuates neuronal loss after postoperative radiotherapy. Its effect on degenerative diseases remains unclear. This drug has two crystalline polymorphs: one with a melting point of 149°C (solid) and the other with a melting point of 295°C (solid). The solid form is stable under physiological conditions and has a high solubility at pH 7.4.
