1-Norbornanecarboxylic acid is a simple aliphatic hydrocarbon that can be found in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. It is a non-polar compound that has been used to study the effect of thermal expansion on microorganisms. 1-Norbornanecarboxylic acid has also been used as a substrate for recombinant cells and ester compounds. The molecule is efficiently synthesized by bacteria that have been engineered to express the synthase gene. The biodegradable nature of this compound makes it useful in cell culture studies with caco-2 cells because it does not interfere with uptake or cell culture.
