8-Nonynoic acid is a fatty acid that belongs to the group of octynoic acids. It has been isolated from an acetate extract and exhibits antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, by binding to bacterial fatty acids. 8-Nonynoic acid also inhibits the growth of gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, by inhibiting the synthesis of fatty acids. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in biochemical assays. The diameter of 8-nonynoic acid is 1.6 x 10-6 m (1 nm).
8-Nonynoic acid can be synthesized by reacting quinoline derivatives with acetyl chloride in the presence of potassium hydroxide and methanol.
8-Nonynoic acid has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on fatty acids.
