Naphthalene-1-sulfonamide is a growth factor that inhibits the activity of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase. It has been shown to have antiproliferative effects in cancer cells, but its effect on non-cancerous cells is unknown. Naphthalene-1-sulfonamide binds to the active site of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase, which may inhibit the hydrolysis of cAMP and ATP. The binding of naphthalene-1-sulfonamide to cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase may also result in an increase in intracellular levels of cAMP and ATP, leading to inhibition of protein kinase A and D activity. This can lead to decreased cellular proliferation, increased apoptosis, or both.
