4-Nitrophlorizin is a chemical that was originally found to be effective against intestinal parasites, such as trophozoites. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the membrane system of these parasites. The mechanism of action is not yet fully understood, but it may be due to its ability to interact with the semenza or their uptake of red blood cells. 4-Nitrophlorizin inhibits the enzyme dodecyl coenzyme A: cholesterol acyltransferase and decreases the uptake of lipids by inhibiting the synthesis of fatty acids in the parasite's cytoplasm. This drug also binds to azide compounds and has potent inhibitory potency against bacterial growth.
