Norethindrone is an orally active progestin, or synthetic form of progesterone, that is used in hormone therapy. It is typically used as a contraceptive or to treat symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Norethindrone belongs to the group of estrogens. It has a chemical structure similar to estradiol and has been shown to have estrogenic effects on tissues such as the endometrium, cervix, and vagina. In addition, it can inhibit ovulation and stimulate the growth of uterine tissue. Norethindrone may also act as a progestin in some tissues by binding with progesterone receptors. The most common side effects are nausea, breast tenderness, headache, bloating and weight gain.
