2-Nitro-1-propanol is an animal health product that has been shown to have a low level of toxicity in animal studies. It is a chemical with a hydroxyl group and an aromatic ring. 2-Nitro-1-propanol can act as a nonionic surfactant, which may be due to its benzalkonium chloride content. This compound also has the ability to reduce the production of propionate, which is a fatty acid that is associated with inflammation and cancer. This chemical also has pharmacologic effects on the human liver cells after incubation and has been shown to be toxic to corneal endothelial cells in vitro. 2-Nitro-1-propanol may have potential for use in treating infectious diseases due to its ability to inhibit bacterial growth through hydrogen bond interactions with the fatty acid tails of lipopolysaccharides (LPS).
