4-(4-Nitrophenoxy)benzoic acid is a reactive intermediate that can be used as an isomerizable precursor in the syntheses of polymers. It has a high tensile strength, and can be processed easily. This compound reacts with benzimidazole (BZ) to form 4-(4-nitrophenoxy)benzophenone (NPB). The processability of this compound is due to its low molecular weight and thermal stability. The synthesis of 4-(4-nitrophenoxy)benzoic acid can be carried out by reacting phenol with nitroethane in the presence of potassium hydroxide.
