Oxazole-5-methanol is an allylic alcohol with a terminal oxazole, which is a five-membered ring containing two nitrogen atoms. It can be modified to synthesize new compounds by reacting with carboxamides, aldehydes, and azides. Oxazole-5-methanol reacts with chlorides to form sulfones, which are useful for the synthesis of antibiotics. The compound can also be used as a precursor for the synthesis of other compounds such as carboxylic acids and carboxylic amines.
