Octyldodecanol is a fatty alcohol that is used as a solvent and in the manufacture of cosmetics. It has been shown to have antiinflammatory activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Octyldodecanol also has a high degree of lubricity and reactivity, which makes it useful for surface methodology. The hydroxyl group on octyldodecanol makes it soluble in water and alcohols. Octyldodecanol can act as an emulsifier by forming hydrogen bonds with the fatty acid chains in lipids, thereby decreasing their solubility in water.
