N-Octanoyl-L-homoserine lactone is a compound that can be used in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against human pathogens including HIV and other viruses, bacterial species, and fungal species. N-Octanoyl-L-homoserine lactone has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis and inducing apoptosis. This compound is also effective against probiotic bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, which are beneficial for treating bowel diseases. N-Octanoyl-L-homoserine lactone is not toxic to wild type strains of mice or humans in concentrations up to 2 mM. This compound has been shown to inhibit the activity of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) by reacting with its prostaglandin synthase component. COX converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandins, which are involved in the inflammatory response.
