L-Ornithine ethyl ester dihydrochloride functions by forming a polyvalent ion with thionyl chloride and disulfide bonds, which can be hydrolyzed to release active ornithine. This drug also has the potential to replace lysine and chondroitin sulfate in cartilage regeneration therapy. L-Ornithine ethyl ester dihydrochloride is also able to degrade hydroxyapatite, an organic compound that is used as a building block for bone tissue.
