4-Oxazolecarboxaldehyde is a natural product that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus. It is synthesized by the reaction of azides with pyrrole in the presence of a base and oxygen activation. 4-Oxazolecarboxaldehyde has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of DNA synthesis, which may be due to its ability to chelate metal ions. The compound also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ribosome, preventing protein synthesis. 4-Oxazolecarboxaldehyde can be synthesized using a Wittig reaction or by condensing formylpyrroles with an aldehyde.
