6-Oxo-1,6-dihydro-pyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It binds to the active site of this enzyme and inhibits its activity by forming hydrogen bonds with key amino acid residues. 6-Oxo-1,6-dihydro-pyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester has a tautomeric equilibrium that is dependent on pH and temperature. The crystal structure of 6-oxo pyrimidine 5 carboxylic acid ethyl ester shows that it has a planar molecular geometry. This drug also has potential as a target molecule for future drug design in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
