Octafluorobut-2-ene is a gas that can be used as a solvent. It is also referred to as 1,1,1,2,3,4,4,4-octafluoro-2-(trifluoromethyl)butane or E-1,1,1,2,3,4,4-octafluorobut-2-ene. Octafluorobut-2-ene is used in chromatographic methods for the separation of chloride ions and other substances. It has been studied for toxicity profiles and hydrogen chloride yields. Octafluorobut-2-ene can react with hydrogen fluoride to form trifluoroacetic acid and water vapor. The reaction mechanism of octafluorobut-2-ene is not fully understood.
