Pentoxazone is a herbicide that belongs to the family of phenylurea herbicides. It has been shown to reduce population growth rates for human pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans. The mechanism of action involves a matrix effect that creates an unfavorable environment for microbial growth. Pentoxazone also exhibits synergistic interactions with other chemicals such as fatty acids which allow it to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. Its use as an agrochemical is limited due to its toxic effects on plants and animals. Pentoxazone can be detected using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
