2-(Pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl)benzaldehyde is an indane that has been shown to undergo the condensation reaction with malononitrile, forming a pyrrolidine and ethyl cyanoacetate. This process can be reversed by amination to produce acrylonitrile, which is in turn converted back to 2-(pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl)benzaldehyde by interconversion. Analogs of 2-(pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl)benzaldehyde include other indanes such as 3-(pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl)benzaldehyde and 4-(pyrrolidin-1-ylmethyl)benzaldehyde. The related compounds are also capable of undergoing the same reactions, providing a rationalized explanation for the structural similarities between these molecules.
