1-Phenyl-2-(phenylsulfonyl)ethanone is a model system for the study of polymerization reactions. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of aliphatic hydrocarbon polymerization. 1-Phenyl-2-(phenylsulfonyl)ethanone reacts with the carboxy group in polymers to form a covalent bond, thereby preventing polymerization. The compound has also been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against palladium complexes and radiation, as well as hydroxyl groups and methyl sulfones. 1-Phenyl-2-(phenylsulfonyl)ethanone can be used to pattern surfaces by controlling the presence and location of reactive groups on the surface, such as fluorine or hydroxy groups. It is also used in molecular modeling studies due to its ability to form active methylene units that are not present in natural products.
