Phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanamine (PPM) is a fluorescent molecule that has been shown to be useful for the in vitro analysis of tissues and cells. PPM is highly soluble in water and has been validated as an optical probe for the detection of fluorescent dyes, proteins, nucleic acids, or lipids. PPM can be used to measure the changes in fluorescence intensity that are associated with changes in the plasma membrane or with alterations in the distribution of specific molecules on cell surfaces. This compound also exhibits tetradentate binding properties and has been shown to bind to the plasma membrane of plant cells and fibroblast cells. It can also be used as a molecular descriptor for microscopy applications.
