1-Phenyl-1H-indole is a potent antagonist that binds to the 5-HT2 receptor. It is used in the treatment of eye disorders, such as uveitis and retinitis. 1-Phenyl-1H-indole has been shown to cause insulin resistance and inhibit the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells, which may be due to its competitive antagonism of the 5-HT2 receptor. This drug also inhibits the synthesis of nitric oxide by inhibiting arachidonic acid metabolism. 1-Phenyl-1H-indole has been studied for its potential use in treating autoimmune diseases and allergic reactions, but has not yet been approved for this use.
