3-Phenylpropiolonitrile is a molecule that contains two hydroxyl groups, two nitrogen atoms, and one carbon atom. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans. This compound is an example of a zwitterion, which means it can be described as having both a positive and negative charge in its molecular structure. 3-Phenylpropiolonitrile has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes in chronic kidney disease patients. The protonated form of this molecule has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro by interfering with DNA synthesis.
