Propylpyridiniumbromide is a polymerization catalyst that has an exothermic reaction, increasing the viscosity of a polymer solution. It is used as a coating on paper, textiles, and metal to provide protection from water and chemical substances. Propylpyridiniumbromide binds to the phosphate group in polyphosphate esters and converts them to phosphoric acid. This reaction is thermodynamically favored by the addition of c1-6 alkyl groups, which are added during the polymerization process. The use of propylpyridiniumbromide reduces or eliminates the need for solvents in some reactions due to its ability to act as both a solvent and a catalyst. Reaction products include polypropylene glycols, polyethylene glycols, and polypropylene ethers.
