2-Phenoxypyridine is a synthetic compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells with low toxicity. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used as an analgesic and antipyretic. 2-Phenoxypyridine binds to the enzyme cyclooxygenase, thereby inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are involved in inflammation and fever. 2-Phenoxypyridine also has been shown to have a high affinity for binding sites on DNA, interfering directly with DNA synthesis, repair and transcription. The inhibition of DNA synthesis leads to cell death by apoptosis or necrosis.
2-Phenoxypyridine may be synthesized from phenol and pyridine in two steps: 1) Addition of hydrochloric acid (HCl) to phenol forms nitrophenol; 2) Reaction of nitrophenol with pyridine will produce 2-phen
