Propylthiocyanate is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water, alcohol, ether and acetone. It has been used as an additive to paint to prevent corrosion and as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. Propylthiocyanate has been shown to have biological properties such as lowering blood pressure, producing neurotrophic factors, and increasing the permeability of cell membranes. These effects are due to its ability to act as a nucleophile and react with molecules containing carbon-carbon double bonds. It also can react with other nucleophiles such as hydroxide ion or amines. The reactive nature of propylthiocyanate makes it useful for organic synthesis but also makes it hazardous if inhaled or ingested.
