2-Phenylethylboronic acid pinacol ester is an aliphatic boronic acid that can be used in the stereoselective synthesis of 1,2-dienes. It is a reactive intermediate that has been shown to undergo a spontaneous cyclization reaction with a variety of olefins to form cyclohexadienes. The regioselectivity of these reactions can be controlled by varying the reaction conditions, such as temperature, solvent, and pressure. This reactivity was shown using chloride as an impurity, which acts both as a competitive inhibitor and an activator for the reaction. Furthermore, this reactivity has been studied using iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) as a catalyst which led to higher yields and more control over the product distribution.
